Hozier to perform at event to promote women's rights and equalityCo. Wicklow native Hozier is to perform at an event in Áras an Uachtaráin to promote women's rights and equality.
The President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, in his role as Champion World Leader of the UN Women HeForShe campaign, will host the event at Áras an Uachtaráin this Friday, 11th March, to promote gender equality, and the role of men in achieving women's rights and in eliminating gender based violence.
In February 2015, President Higgins accepted the invitation of Phumzile Mlambo-Ngucka, UN Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN Women, to become a Champion of the HeForShe campaign. This global campaign is one that has the engagement of men and boys at its core, seeking to bring one half of humanity together in support of the other half of our human family and engaging institutions and organisations that are in a position to influence change within communities, and particularly those settings where women are most vulnerable to gender inequality and discrimination. This event is intended to promote awareness of the HeForShe Campaign in Ireland, and also to raise awareness about SAFE Ireland's MAN UP campaign which also engages men as leaders in combatting gender based violence.
The event will be attended by leading national organisations including IBEC, ICTU, USI, the FAI and the Defence Forces, who will all make commitments to promote the principles of the HeForShe Campaign among their members. The event will also hear from special guests Hozier, who will perform his new single Cherry Wine, and MAN UP Ambassador Ryan Tubridy.
